The conference focuses on the new territorial ecologies that urban planning is increasingly called upon to define in order to coexist - sustainably and equitably - with a changing world.
This theme, already central to recent debates promoted by the Italian scientific society of urban planners, has gained momentum from recent constitutional amendments. These added, alongside the protection of “the landscape and the historical and artistic heritage of the nation,” the safeguarding of “the environment, biodiversity, and ecosystems, also in the interest of future generations” (Art. 9), and established that economic initiatives must not harm “health,” whether for “social” or “environmental” purposes (Art. 41).
The contributions were presented in Session 5. GAIA, TERRITORIES OF BIODIVERSITY, and Session 7. INFRASTRUCTURES.
Session 5 highlights climate change—primarily due to rising temperatures—which causes irreversible transformations of territories with serious consequences on people’s lives. Urban planning, traditionally engaged with environmental issues, is now called to provide updated theoretical and operational tools: rethinking the “healthy city” and public health; adopting strategic approaches to green and blue infrastructures; emphasizing the role of people in urban regeneration and transformation processes. Addressing these challenges requires renewed urban planning thought, starting from changes in individual behaviors and everyday practices.
Session 7 focuses on the role of infrastructures in cities and territories, showing how they transform nature, enable access to resources, and underpin urban life, directly impacting quality of life and the territory. Today’s challenges—climate change, ecological transition, and reducing resource consumption—are straining traditional infrastructures. The push for more sustainable solutions is fostering new systems, such as decentralized, “post-network” infrastructures and those harnessing nature’s potential (green and blue infrastructures).
